New Class:

"The Artist in You"

NEW TECHNIQUE:... "lines into designs"©

TEACHER: Sue Olsen/ Dog Gone Quilts

This new quilting technique is meant for the quilter who is ready to venture out on their own and begin designing. If you have repeatedly said to yourself… "if I could only draw…I would create that image into a quilt"…well, this technique is for you! As I have been teaching it now for over a year, I have had the privilege of watching quilters draw their own imperfect line drawing by hand and then turn it into one-of-a-kind piece of fabric art. These are quilters of all sewing levels. It has been thrilling to watch them create something they did not think they could ever do.

This technique has many variables. Some are unpredictable which lends itself to unique results. I am teaching this new quilting technique in the new class "The Artist In You". This class teaches quilters how to find the artist hidden inside of them by giving the a few easy steps to follow. These steps show them how to "draw" their own drawing from a favorite image. That image is then turned into a one-of-a-kind piece of fabric art. In many cases these images are turned into heirlooms as the image was a favorite childhood memory in the form of a cherished photo or a favorite piece of art created by a child.

Briefly, this technique… "lines into designs" starts with a 4"x 6" image , which is enlarged to about 16"x 24". Major design lines from the enlargement are traced onto water soluble stabilizer forming a quilt pattern. The stabilizer is attached to one side of the quilt sandwich and used as a guideline to trace mirror image pattern pieces as well as the guide for machine quilting lines. Pattern pieces are chosen and cut from colorful fabric to enhance the design. Once the fabrics are all in place, the quilt is then enhanced by attaching each pattern piece to the quilt sandwich through free-motion sewing by following the lines on the stabilizer. The entire quilt is then submerged under water to dissolve the stabilizer which produces many interesting results.
